Lokalenergi: a Strong Partner

In 1999, liberalisation of the Danish energy sector created an open electricity market. Electricity companies were no longer allowed both to own the supply net and supply electricity, and this meant that a lot of companies had to be broken up.

As a consequence of this development, and in order to achieve a stronger competitive position, Østjysk Energy decided in 2002, together with neighbouring electricity supply companies Galten Elværk, Viby Elværk and Brabrand El-selskab, to establish a new company: Lokalenergi. Lokalenergi is 50% owned by Østjysk Energi, as Østjysk Energi, with its approximately 52,000 installations, is the largest of the net companies. Today Lokalenergi supplies almost 75 % of the electricity consumed in the supply area.

A Wide Range of Products

Lokalenergi consists of two distinct limited companies: Lokalenergi Forsyning A/S (electricity supply) and Lokalenergi Handel A/S (electricity trading).

Lokalenergi Forsyning A/S was established in order to purchase electricity on behalf of parent company customers who do not wish to purchase electricity on the free market. Lokalenergi thus has a statutory obligation to deliver electricity in the Østjysk Energi area.

Lokalenergi Handel A/S was established in order to address a range of tasks, primarily:

- sale and administration of company electricity purchase contracts - general private sector and householder energy consultancy - sale of energy-related products, e.g. heat pumps - research and development

Green Electricity

Lokalenergi's portfolio of electricity products is continuously developed in order to meet the needs of private customers and companies. Examples include 'Green Electricity', whereby the customer supports environmentally-friendly electricity production by purchasing electricity generated by Danish windmills, and 'Payment Ceiling', whereby the customer benefits from a price cap and may even receive an annual bonus.

White Goods Consultancy

When householders replace their white goods, Lokanenergi consultants can provide them with the guidance they need. Our consultants have access to an extensive database of facts and test information relating to the various market products. Net company consumers, including Østjysk Energi, Brabrand El-selskab, Viby El-værk and Galten Elværk customers, can contact consultants free of charge for expert purchasing assistance.

Cutting Edge Development

Lokalenergi is heavily involved in a wide range of research and development projects. We deliver both highly-specialised process and manufacturing equipment improvements for energy-intensive companies and general energy saving and consumer behaviour analysis. Projects we are involved with cover target groups ranging from company managers to teenagers and are located in a number of countries including Ireland, the US and Canada.

New Energy-Saving Regulations as of 2006

An important aspect of Lokalenergi's consultancy is realizing the Danish electricity sector’s energy saving targets. A new government energy saving plan has been passed into law, which will remain in force until 2009. This entails that, on behalf of the four net companies, Lokalenergi is to generate realized savings of four times current levels. At the same time, documentation requirements have tightened significantly. In an easing of previous legislation, electricity companies may now find savings from other energy types such as gas, oil and coal.
